Is 10/5 greater than 4/6?
To compare two fractions, such as 10/5 and 4/6, there are two main common methods: the first one involves finding a common denominator, and the other one is to convert the fractions directly into decimal values.
1) Using the same denominator
- Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction: 10 × 6 = 60
- Multiply the numerator of the second fraction with the denominator of the first fraction 4 × 5 = 20
- Multiply the denominators of both fractions together: 5 × 6 = 30
- Rewrite both fractions with the new common denominator:
- 10/5 = 60/30
- 4/6 = 20/30
With a common denominator, the comparison becomes much simpler.
Since 60 is larger than 20, we can conclude that 10/5 is greater than 4/6.
2) Converting to decimal
We can also simply convert the fractions into decimal values:
- 10 divided by 5 is equal to 2
- 4 divided by 6 is equal to 0.66666666666667
Since 2 is larger than 0.66666666666667, it means that 10/5 is greater than 4/6.
