Is 10/8 greater than 7/10?
To compare two fractions, such as 10/8 and 7/10, there are two main common methods: the first one involves finding a common denominator, and the other one is to convert the fractions directly into decimal values.
1) Using the same denominator
- Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction: 10 × 10 = 100
- Multiply the numerator of the second fraction with the denominator of the first fraction 7 × 8 = 56
- Multiply the denominators of both fractions together: 8 × 10 = 80
- Rewrite both fractions with the new common denominator:
- 10/8 = 100/80
- 7/10 = 56/80
With a common denominator, the comparison becomes much simpler.
Since 100 is larger than 56, we can conclude that 10/8 is greater than 7/10.
2) Converting to decimal
We can also simply convert the fractions into decimal values:
- 10 divided by 8 is equal to 1.25
- 7 divided by 10 is equal to 0.7
Since 1.25 is larger than 0.7, it means that 10/8 is greater than 7/10.
