Is 2/4 greater than 6/10?
To compare two fractions, such as 2/4 and 6/10, there are two main common methods: the first one involves finding a common denominator, and the other one is to convert the fractions directly into decimal values.
1) Using the same denominator
- Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction: 2 × 10 = 20
- Multiply the numerator of the second fraction with the denominator of the first fraction 6 × 4 = 24
- Multiply the denominators of both fractions together: 4 × 10 = 40
- Rewrite both fractions with the new common denominator:
- 2/4 = 20/40
- 6/10 = 24/40
With a common denominator, the comparison becomes much simpler.
Since 20 is smaller than 24, we can conclude that 2/4 is less than 6/10.
2) Converting to decimal
We can also simply convert the fractions into decimal values:
- 2 divided by 4 is equal to 0.5
- 6 divided by 10 is equal to 0.6
Since 0.5 is smaller than 0.6, it means that 2/4 is less than 6/10.
