Is 2/4 greater than 6/3?
To compare two fractions, such as 2/4 and 6/3, there are two main common methods: the first one involves finding a common denominator, and the other one is to convert the fractions directly into decimal values.
1) Using the same denominator
- Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction: 2 × 3 = 6
- Multiply the numerator of the second fraction with the denominator of the first fraction 6 × 4 = 24
- Multiply the denominators of both fractions together: 4 × 3 = 12
- Rewrite both fractions with the new common denominator:
- 2/4 = 6/12
- 6/3 = 24/12
With a common denominator, the comparison becomes much simpler.
Since 6 is smaller than 24, we can conclude that 2/4 is less than 6/3.
2) Converting to decimal
We can also simply convert the fractions into decimal values:
- 2 divided by 4 is equal to 0.5
- 6 divided by 3 is equal to 2
Since 0.5 is smaller than 2, it means that 2/4 is less than 6/3.
