Is 3/9 greater than 3/7?
To compare two fractions, such as 3/9 and 3/7, there are two main common methods: the first one involves finding a common denominator, and the other one is to convert the fractions directly into decimal values.
1) Using the same denominator
- Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction: 3 × 7 = 21
- Multiply the numerator of the second fraction with the denominator of the first fraction 3 × 9 = 27
- Multiply the denominators of both fractions together: 9 × 7 = 63
- Rewrite both fractions with the new common denominator:
- 3/9 = 21/63
- 3/7 = 27/63
With a common denominator, the comparison becomes much simpler.
Since 21 is smaller than 27, we can conclude that 3/9 is less than 3/7.
2) Converting to decimal
We can also simply convert the fractions into decimal values:
- 3 divided by 9 is equal to 0.33333333333333
- 3 divided by 7 is equal to 0.42857142857143
Since 0.33333333333333 is smaller than 0.42857142857143, it means that 3/9 is less than 3/7.
