Is 4/10 greater than 3/6?
To compare two fractions, such as 4/10 and 3/6, there are two main common methods: the first one involves finding a common denominator, and the other one is to convert the fractions directly into decimal values.
1) Using the same denominator
- Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction: 4 × 6 = 24
- Multiply the numerator of the second fraction with the denominator of the first fraction 3 × 10 = 30
- Multiply the denominators of both fractions together: 10 × 6 = 60
- Rewrite both fractions with the new common denominator:
- 4/10 = 24/60
- 3/6 = 30/60
With a common denominator, the comparison becomes much simpler.
Since 24 is smaller than 30, we can conclude that 4/10 is less than 3/6.
2) Converting to decimal
We can also simply convert the fractions into decimal values:
- 4 divided by 10 is equal to 0.4
- 3 divided by 6 is equal to 0.5
Since 0.4 is smaller than 0.5, it means that 4/10 is less than 3/6.
