Is 4/10 greater than 8/2?
To compare two fractions, such as 4/10 and 8/2, there are two main common methods: the first one involves finding a common denominator, and the other one is to convert the fractions directly into decimal values.
1) Using the same denominator
- Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction: 4 × 2 = 8
- Multiply the numerator of the second fraction with the denominator of the first fraction 8 × 10 = 80
- Multiply the denominators of both fractions together: 10 × 2 = 20
- Rewrite both fractions with the new common denominator:
- 4/10 = 8/20
- 8/2 = 80/20
With a common denominator, the comparison becomes much simpler.
Since 8 is smaller than 80, we can conclude that 4/10 is less than 8/2.
2) Converting to decimal
We can also simply convert the fractions into decimal values:
- 4 divided by 10 is equal to 0.4
- 8 divided by 2 is equal to 4
Since 0.4 is smaller than 4, it means that 4/10 is less than 8/2.
