Is 4/3 greater than 9/5?
To compare two fractions, such as 4/3 and 9/5, there are two main common methods: the first one involves finding a common denominator, and the other one is to convert the fractions directly into decimal values.
1) Using the same denominator
- Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction: 4 × 5 = 20
- Multiply the numerator of the second fraction with the denominator of the first fraction 9 × 3 = 27
- Multiply the denominators of both fractions together: 3 × 5 = 15
- Rewrite both fractions with the new common denominator:
- 4/3 = 20/15
- 9/5 = 27/15
With a common denominator, the comparison becomes much simpler.
Since 20 is smaller than 27, we can conclude that 4/3 is less than 9/5.
2) Converting to decimal
We can also simply convert the fractions into decimal values:
- 4 divided by 3 is equal to 1.3333333333333
- 9 divided by 5 is equal to 1.8
Since 1.3333333333333 is smaller than 1.8, it means that 4/3 is less than 9/5.
