Is 4/4 greater than 5/6?
To compare two fractions, such as 4/4 and 5/6, there are two main common methods: the first one involves finding a common denominator, and the other one is to convert the fractions directly into decimal values.
1) Using the same denominator
- Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction: 4 × 6 = 24
- Multiply the numerator of the second fraction with the denominator of the first fraction 5 × 4 = 20
- Multiply the denominators of both fractions together: 4 × 6 = 24
- Rewrite both fractions with the new common denominator:
- 4/4 = 24/24
- 5/6 = 20/24
With a common denominator, the comparison becomes much simpler.
Since 24 is larger than 20, we can conclude that 4/4 is greater than 5/6.
2) Converting to decimal
We can also simply convert the fractions into decimal values:
- 4 divided by 4 is equal to 1
- 5 divided by 6 is equal to 0.83333333333333
Since 1 is larger than 0.83333333333333, it means that 4/4 is greater than 5/6.
