Is 4/6 greater than 3/5?
To compare two fractions, such as 4/6 and 3/5, there are two main common methods: the first one involves finding a common denominator, and the other one is to convert the fractions directly into decimal values.
1) Using the same denominator
- Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction: 4 × 5 = 20
- Multiply the numerator of the second fraction with the denominator of the first fraction 3 × 6 = 18
- Multiply the denominators of both fractions together: 6 × 5 = 30
- Rewrite both fractions with the new common denominator:
- 4/6 = 20/30
- 3/5 = 18/30
With a common denominator, the comparison becomes much simpler.
Since 20 is larger than 18, we can conclude that 4/6 is greater than 3/5.
2) Converting to decimal
We can also simply convert the fractions into decimal values:
- 4 divided by 6 is equal to 0.66666666666667
- 3 divided by 5 is equal to 0.6
Since 0.66666666666667 is larger than 0.6, it means that 4/6 is greater than 3/5.
