Is 4/6 greater than 4/10?
To compare two fractions, such as 4/6 and 4/10, there are two main common methods: the first one involves finding a common denominator, and the other one is to convert the fractions directly into decimal values.
1) Using the same denominator
- Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction: 4 × 10 = 40
- Multiply the numerator of the second fraction with the denominator of the first fraction 4 × 6 = 24
- Multiply the denominators of both fractions together: 6 × 10 = 60
- Rewrite both fractions with the new common denominator:
- 4/6 = 40/60
- 4/10 = 24/60
With a common denominator, the comparison becomes much simpler.
Since 40 is larger than 24, we can conclude that 4/6 is greater than 4/10.
2) Converting to decimal
We can also simply convert the fractions into decimal values:
- 4 divided by 6 is equal to 0.66666666666667
- 4 divided by 10 is equal to 0.4
Since 0.66666666666667 is larger than 0.4, it means that 4/6 is greater than 4/10.
