Is 4/6 greater than 4/2?
To compare two fractions, such as 4/6 and 4/2, there are two main common methods: the first one involves finding a common denominator, and the other one is to convert the fractions directly into decimal values.
1) Using the same denominator
- Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction: 4 × 2 = 8
- Multiply the numerator of the second fraction with the denominator of the first fraction 4 × 6 = 24
- Multiply the denominators of both fractions together: 6 × 2 = 12
- Rewrite both fractions with the new common denominator:
- 4/6 = 8/12
- 4/2 = 24/12
With a common denominator, the comparison becomes much simpler.
Since 8 is smaller than 24, we can conclude that 4/6 is less than 4/2.
2) Converting to decimal
We can also simply convert the fractions into decimal values:
- 4 divided by 6 is equal to 0.66666666666667
- 4 divided by 2 is equal to 2
Since 0.66666666666667 is smaller than 2, it means that 4/6 is less than 4/2.
