Is 4/8 greater than 8/10?
To compare two fractions, such as 4/8 and 8/10, there are two main common methods: the first one involves finding a common denominator, and the other one is to convert the fractions directly into decimal values.
1) Using the same denominator
- Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction: 4 × 10 = 40
- Multiply the numerator of the second fraction with the denominator of the first fraction 8 × 8 = 64
- Multiply the denominators of both fractions together: 8 × 10 = 80
- Rewrite both fractions with the new common denominator:
- 4/8 = 40/80
- 8/10 = 64/80
With a common denominator, the comparison becomes much simpler.
Since 40 is smaller than 64, we can conclude that 4/8 is less than 8/10.
2) Converting to decimal
We can also simply convert the fractions into decimal values:
- 4 divided by 8 is equal to 0.5
- 8 divided by 10 is equal to 0.8
Since 0.5 is smaller than 0.8, it means that 4/8 is less than 8/10.
