Is 4/9 greater than 3/2?
To compare two fractions, such as 4/9 and 3/2, there are two main common methods: the first one involves finding a common denominator, and the other one is to convert the fractions directly into decimal values.
1) Using the same denominator
- Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction: 4 × 2 = 8
- Multiply the numerator of the second fraction with the denominator of the first fraction 3 × 9 = 27
- Multiply the denominators of both fractions together: 9 × 2 = 18
- Rewrite both fractions with the new common denominator:
- 4/9 = 8/18
- 3/2 = 27/18
With a common denominator, the comparison becomes much simpler.
Since 8 is smaller than 27, we can conclude that 4/9 is less than 3/2.
2) Converting to decimal
We can also simply convert the fractions into decimal values:
- 4 divided by 9 is equal to 0.44444444444444
- 3 divided by 2 is equal to 1.5
Since 0.44444444444444 is smaller than 1.5, it means that 4/9 is less than 3/2.
