Is 4/9 greater than 7/5?
To compare two fractions, such as 4/9 and 7/5, there are two main common methods: the first one involves finding a common denominator, and the other one is to convert the fractions directly into decimal values.
1) Using the same denominator
- Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction: 4 × 5 = 20
- Multiply the numerator of the second fraction with the denominator of the first fraction 7 × 9 = 63
- Multiply the denominators of both fractions together: 9 × 5 = 45
- Rewrite both fractions with the new common denominator:
- 4/9 = 20/45
- 7/5 = 63/45
With a common denominator, the comparison becomes much simpler.
Since 20 is smaller than 63, we can conclude that 4/9 is less than 7/5.
2) Converting to decimal
We can also simply convert the fractions into decimal values:
- 4 divided by 9 is equal to 0.44444444444444
- 7 divided by 5 is equal to 1.4
Since 0.44444444444444 is smaller than 1.4, it means that 4/9 is less than 7/5.
