Is 5/3 greater than 8/10?
To compare two fractions, such as 5/3 and 8/10, there are two main common methods: the first one involves finding a common denominator, and the other one is to convert the fractions directly into decimal values.
1) Using the same denominator
- Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction: 5 × 10 = 50
- Multiply the numerator of the second fraction with the denominator of the first fraction 8 × 3 = 24
- Multiply the denominators of both fractions together: 3 × 10 = 30
- Rewrite both fractions with the new common denominator:
- 5/3 = 50/30
- 8/10 = 24/30
With a common denominator, the comparison becomes much simpler.
Since 50 is larger than 24, we can conclude that 5/3 is greater than 8/10.
2) Converting to decimal
We can also simply convert the fractions into decimal values:
- 5 divided by 3 is equal to 1.6666666666667
- 8 divided by 10 is equal to 0.8
Since 1.6666666666667 is larger than 0.8, it means that 5/3 is greater than 8/10.
