Is 6/10 greater than 10/6?
To compare two fractions, such as 6/10 and 10/6, there are two main common methods: the first one involves finding a common denominator, and the other one is to convert the fractions directly into decimal values.
1) Using the same denominator
- Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction: 6 × 6 = 36
- Multiply the numerator of the second fraction with the denominator of the first fraction 10 × 10 = 100
- Multiply the denominators of both fractions together: 10 × 6 = 60
- Rewrite both fractions with the new common denominator:
- 6/10 = 36/60
- 10/6 = 100/60
With a common denominator, the comparison becomes much simpler.
Since 36 is smaller than 100, we can conclude that 6/10 is less than 10/6.
2) Converting to decimal
We can also simply convert the fractions into decimal values:
- 6 divided by 10 is equal to 0.6
- 10 divided by 6 is equal to 1.6666666666667
Since 0.6 is smaller than 1.6666666666667, it means that 6/10 is less than 10/6.
