Is 7/3 greater than 8/2?
To compare two fractions, such as 7/3 and 8/2, there are two main common methods: the first one involves finding a common denominator, and the other one is to convert the fractions directly into decimal values.
1) Using the same denominator
- Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction: 7 × 2 = 14
- Multiply the numerator of the second fraction with the denominator of the first fraction 8 × 3 = 24
- Multiply the denominators of both fractions together: 3 × 2 = 6
- Rewrite both fractions with the new common denominator:
- 7/3 = 14/6
- 8/2 = 24/6
With a common denominator, the comparison becomes much simpler.
Since 14 is smaller than 24, we can conclude that 7/3 is less than 8/2.
2) Converting to decimal
We can also simply convert the fractions into decimal values:
- 7 divided by 3 is equal to 2.3333333333333
- 8 divided by 2 is equal to 4
Since 2.3333333333333 is smaller than 4, it means that 7/3 is less than 8/2.
