Is 8/10 greater than 2/6?
To compare two fractions, such as 8/10 and 2/6, there are two main common methods: the first one involves finding a common denominator, and the other one is to convert the fractions directly into decimal values.
1) Using the same denominator
- Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction: 8 × 6 = 48
- Multiply the numerator of the second fraction with the denominator of the first fraction 2 × 10 = 20
- Multiply the denominators of both fractions together: 10 × 6 = 60
- Rewrite both fractions with the new common denominator:
- 8/10 = 48/60
- 2/6 = 20/60
With a common denominator, the comparison becomes much simpler.
Since 48 is larger than 20, we can conclude that 8/10 is greater than 2/6.
2) Converting to decimal
We can also simply convert the fractions into decimal values:
- 8 divided by 10 is equal to 0.8
- 2 divided by 6 is equal to 0.33333333333333
Since 0.8 is larger than 0.33333333333333, it means that 8/10 is greater than 2/6.
