Is 8/10 greater than 9/3?
To compare two fractions, such as 8/10 and 9/3, there are two main common methods: the first one involves finding a common denominator, and the other one is to convert the fractions directly into decimal values.
1) Using the same denominator
- Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction: 8 × 3 = 24
- Multiply the numerator of the second fraction with the denominator of the first fraction 9 × 10 = 90
- Multiply the denominators of both fractions together: 10 × 3 = 30
- Rewrite both fractions with the new common denominator:
- 8/10 = 24/30
- 9/3 = 90/30
With a common denominator, the comparison becomes much simpler.
Since 24 is smaller than 90, we can conclude that 8/10 is less than 9/3.
2) Converting to decimal
We can also simply convert the fractions into decimal values:
- 8 divided by 10 is equal to 0.8
- 9 divided by 3 is equal to 3
Since 0.8 is smaller than 3, it means that 8/10 is less than 9/3.
