Is 8/2 greater than 1/10?
To compare two fractions, such as 8/2 and 1/10, there are two main common methods: the first one involves finding a common denominator, and the other one is to convert the fractions directly into decimal values.
1) Using the same denominator
- Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction: 8 × 10 = 80
- Multiply the numerator of the second fraction with the denominator of the first fraction 1 × 2 = 2
- Multiply the denominators of both fractions together: 2 × 10 = 20
- Rewrite both fractions with the new common denominator:
- 8/2 = 80/20
- 1/10 = 2/20
With a common denominator, the comparison becomes much simpler.
Since 80 is larger than 2, we can conclude that 8/2 is greater than 1/10.
2) Converting to decimal
We can also simply convert the fractions into decimal values:
- 8 divided by 2 is equal to 4
- 1 divided by 10 is equal to 0.1
Since 4 is larger than 0.1, it means that 8/2 is greater than 1/10.
