Is 8/3 greater than 2/5?
To compare two fractions, such as 8/3 and 2/5, there are two main common methods: the first one involves finding a common denominator, and the other one is to convert the fractions directly into decimal values.
1) Using the same denominator
- Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction: 8 × 5 = 40
- Multiply the numerator of the second fraction with the denominator of the first fraction 2 × 3 = 6
- Multiply the denominators of both fractions together: 3 × 5 = 15
- Rewrite both fractions with the new common denominator:
- 8/3 = 40/15
- 2/5 = 6/15
With a common denominator, the comparison becomes much simpler.
Since 40 is larger than 6, we can conclude that 8/3 is greater than 2/5.
2) Converting to decimal
We can also simply convert the fractions into decimal values:
- 8 divided by 3 is equal to 2.6666666666667
- 2 divided by 5 is equal to 0.4
Since 2.6666666666667 is larger than 0.4, it means that 8/3 is greater than 2/5.
