Is 9/10 greater than 4/7?
To compare two fractions, such as 9/10 and 4/7, there are two main common methods: the first one involves finding a common denominator, and the other one is to convert the fractions directly into decimal values.
1) Using the same denominator
- Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction: 9 × 7 = 63
- Multiply the numerator of the second fraction with the denominator of the first fraction 4 × 10 = 40
- Multiply the denominators of both fractions together: 10 × 7 = 70
- Rewrite both fractions with the new common denominator:
- 9/10 = 63/70
- 4/7 = 40/70
With a common denominator, the comparison becomes much simpler.
Since 63 is larger than 40, we can conclude that 9/10 is greater than 4/7.
2) Converting to decimal
We can also simply convert the fractions into decimal values:
- 9 divided by 10 is equal to 0.9
- 4 divided by 7 is equal to 0.57142857142857
Since 0.9 is larger than 0.57142857142857, it means that 9/10 is greater than 4/7.
