Is 9/4 greater than 4/3?
To compare two fractions, such as 9/4 and 4/3, there are two main common methods: the first one involves finding a common denominator, and the other one is to convert the fractions directly into decimal values.
1) Using the same denominator
- Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction: 9 × 3 = 27
- Multiply the numerator of the second fraction with the denominator of the first fraction 4 × 4 = 16
- Multiply the denominators of both fractions together: 4 × 3 = 12
- Rewrite both fractions with the new common denominator:
- 9/4 = 27/12
- 4/3 = 16/12
With a common denominator, the comparison becomes much simpler.
Since 27 is larger than 16, we can conclude that 9/4 is greater than 4/3.
2) Converting to decimal
We can also simply convert the fractions into decimal values:
- 9 divided by 4 is equal to 2.25
- 4 divided by 3 is equal to 1.3333333333333
Since 2.25 is larger than 1.3333333333333, it means that 9/4 is greater than 4/3.
