Is 9/5 greater than 5/6?
To compare two fractions, such as 9/5 and 5/6, there are two main common methods: the first one involves finding a common denominator, and the other one is to convert the fractions directly into decimal values.
1) Using the same denominator
- Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction: 9 × 6 = 54
- Multiply the numerator of the second fraction with the denominator of the first fraction 5 × 5 = 25
- Multiply the denominators of both fractions together: 5 × 6 = 30
- Rewrite both fractions with the new common denominator:
- 9/5 = 54/30
- 5/6 = 25/30
With a common denominator, the comparison becomes much simpler.
Since 54 is larger than 25, we can conclude that 9/5 is greater than 5/6.
2) Converting to decimal
We can also simply convert the fractions into decimal values:
- 9 divided by 5 is equal to 1.8
- 5 divided by 6 is equal to 0.83333333333333
Since 1.8 is larger than 0.83333333333333, it means that 9/5 is greater than 5/6.
