Is 4/10 greater than 8/1?
To compare two fractions, such as 4/10 and 8/1, there are two main common methods: the first one involves finding a common denominator, and the other one is to convert the fractions directly into decimal values.
1) Using the same denominator
- Multiply the numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction: 4 × 1 = 4
- Multiply the numerator of the second fraction with the denominator of the first fraction 8 × 10 = 80
- Multiply the denominators of both fractions together: 10 × 1 = 10
- Rewrite both fractions with the new common denominator:
- 4/10 = 4/10
- 8/1 = 80/10
With a common denominator, the comparison becomes much simpler.
Since 4 is smaller than 80, we can conclude that 4/10 is less than 8/1.
2) Converting to decimal
We can also simply convert the fractions into decimal values:
- 4 divided by 10 is equal to 0.4
- 8 divided by 1 is equal to 8
Since 0.4 is smaller than 8, it means that 4/10 is less than 8/1.
